Thundering Falls Trail/part of the Appalachian Trail- Killington, VT

recommended by Kim and Jack from Ohio

trail specifics provided by the Executive Director and Jennifer/Office Coordinator for the Green Mountain Club, which played a large role in building this accessible trail

directions to Thundering Falls from the north: take VT Route 100 south, left on River Road (a windy, gravel road), "the Appalachian Trail crosses River Road just beyond its junction with Archie Baker Road, trailhead parking is on right"

directions from south: take VT Route 4/100, take a right on River Road, "pass the junction with Thundering Brook Road on your left, the Appalachian Trail crosses River Road just beyond Thundering Brook Road, trailhead parking is on the left"

- this is the 4th part of the 2,175 mile Appalachian National Scenic Trail to be made wheelchair accessible

- brand new trail just opened September 13, 2008

- consists partially of a 900 foot plastic lumber boardwalk

- "The boardwalk will lead approximately 60 feet down a gentle grade to a bridge across the Ottauquechee River. South of the bridge, the boardwalk extends through the river's floodplain and climbs via switchback (packed gravel) to end at a viewing platform near the foot of the Thundering Falls."

Baldwin Interpretive Trail on Mount Independence State Historic Site- Orwell, Vermont  (photos below)

- directions: six miles west of intersection of Vermont Route 73 and Route 22A in Orwell; trail is located near end of Mount Independence Road

- 1.6 mile compacted crushed stone surface, wheelchair accessible trail which winds around the southern half of the Mount

- "The interpretive sign panels are also at an appropriate height."

- archaelogical sites and views of Lake Champlain Valley

- Mount Independence- National Historic Landmark and American Revolutionary War site

- "The museum is all on one level and is also accessible."

- admission to this Revolutionary War historic site: $5 adults, kids under 15 free

- "The site is usually open from Memorial Day weekend Saturday through Columbus Day."  note: The 2009 schedule has not been determined yet.
