Virginia

many thanks to the people at http://www.hikingupward.com/ for the great information and especially for being so generous with their photos

Dutch Gap Conservation Area- Richmond

- James River Tidal Lagoon Area

- this is a 4.4 mile trail, most of it loop trail, around the lagoon

- most of the path is "well packed and hard"

- *I strongly urge wheelchair hikers to bring a friend.  There are two short (30 to 75 yards) areas of incline which may require assistance.  See bottom two photos below to view these areas.

- "a great hike for families with young children due to lack of elevation change"

enjoy lots of birds, deer and other wildlife

- for really specific directions and a great printable trail map go to

Belle Isle- Richmond

- "family friendly, wheelchair accessible hike in the middle of the James River"

-  a hanging pedestrian bridge takes you over the river to Belle Isle where there is a loop trail

- "other than the ramps, the path around Belle Isle is pretty packed and flat"

- "the ramp leading up to the pedestrian bridge and down onto the Isle might be a bit of a challenge"  The ramps do include switchbacks to ease the hike. *see bottom right photo for view of switchback.

- watch for lots of wildlife and signage including Civil War historical info

- for very specific trail directions from the parking lot and a great trail map, please go to
